Drainage Problems Don't Fix Themselves

Stop Fighting Water Every Time It Rains.

A yard that never dries out, a downspout that floods the foundation, or runoff washing across your driveway can make your property difficult to use and maintain.

At R&H Tractor Services, we look at the bigger picture: where water is coming from, how the land slopes, where water collects and where it can be directed. The right solution might be a French drain, buried gutter piping, a catch basin, a drainage swale, grading improvements or a combination of methods.

Our excavation capabilities also allow us to handle the trenching, pipe installation, backfilling and related yard restoration involved in many drainage projects.

Common Water Problems

Does Any of This Sound Familiar?

These are the types of drainage problems West Michigan property owners regularly contact contractors to solve.

Standing Water in the Yard

Low spots, puddles and saturated lawn areas that remain wet long after rainfall.

Water Near the Foundation

Runoff collecting against the house, near window wells or in areas that contribute to basement moisture concerns.

Overflowing Gutters & Downspouts

Roof runoff discharging beside the home, overwhelming the lawn or creating recurring wet areas.

Driveway Washouts

Rainwater crossing a driveway, carrying gravel away or creating ruts and erosion.

Poor Yard Slope

Improper grading that sends water toward buildings or traps it in unwanted locations.

Failed Drainage Systems

Existing underground lines, drains or outlets that are damaged, clogged or no longer functioning properly.

Drainage Installation & Repair

Practical Drainage Solutions for Your Property.

Not every wet yard needs the same solution. We help determine which drainage approach makes sense for the site.

01

French Drain Installation

Subsurface drainage systems designed to intercept and move water through suitable drainage stone and perforated piping.

02

Underground Gutter Drains

Buried downspout drainage piping to direct roof runoff away from problem areas around your home.

03

Catch Basins & Drain Boxes

Surface collection points for low spots, concentrated runoff and areas where water needs to enter an underground drainage line.

04

Leach Basins & Drainage Outlets

Site-appropriate systems for managing collected water, subject to soil conditions, available capacity and local requirements.

05

Drainage Swales & Yard Grading

Shaping the land to guide surface runoff toward suitable drainage routes rather than allowing it to collect against buildings.

06

Drainage Repairs & Improvements

Addressing existing systems that aren't doing their job, including underground piping and drainage collection components.

Real Drainage Projects. Real West Michigan Properties.

From buried gutter drains to extensive drainage piping, these projects show how R&H approaches water management, excavation and cleanup.

PROJECT 01 Grand Rapids, Michigan

Gutter Drainage System with Two Leach Basins.

For this Grand Rapids property, R&H installed a gutter drainage system incorporating two leach basins.

The project is an example of collecting roof runoff and managing it through an underground drainage system instead of allowing it to discharge directly beside the building.

PROJECT 02 Drainage, Grading & Hydroseeding

Solving Drainage Problems While Restoring the Yard.

This project brought together several complementary services: drainage installation, finish grading and hydroseeding.

The photographs show the original yard conditions, underground drainage pipe, a drainage basin and the finished property after hydroseeding.

It's a good example of why drainage work and yard grading often belong in the same project. Moving water is important, but so is leaving the property properly shaped and ready for grass to establish.

PROJECT 03 Hastings, Michigan

French Drain & Gutter Drainage with Special Care for the Existing Lawn.

At this Hastings property, R&H installed two gutter drains and a small French drain to collect water near the house.

The homeowner wanted to preserve the existing yard as much as possible. Rather than simply tracking heavy equipment across the grass, the crew laid plywood on both sides of the trench for the mini excavator.

That approach helped prevent extensive track damage and kept the impact on the surrounding lawn to a minimum.

Attention to the property: Plywood was used to protect the lawn while the drainage trench was excavated.

PROJECT 04 Hastings, Michigan

Approximately 200 Feet of Drainage Pipe to Manage Standing Water, Gutters & Rain Barrel Overflow.

This Hastings project involved approximately 200 feet of drainage pipe installed to address standing water and gutter runoff.

The crew also connected the property's rain barrel to the drainage system to prevent it from overflowing onto the ground.

One of the biggest challenges was the number of existing utilities in the yard. R&H worked around those constraints while completing the underground installation and cleanup.

The finished project reflects the team's focus on clean, professional workmanship as well as functional drainage.

Choosing the Right Drainage System

French Drain, Catch Basin, Underground Pipe or Grading?

The best drainage solution depends on how water moves across the property.

  • French drains can help intercept water moving through saturated ground.
  • Catch basins collect surface runoff in low areas.
  • Buried downspout piping carries roof runoff away from the building.
  • Swales and grading guide water across the surface using the slope of the land.
  • Drainage outlets and basins provide appropriate destinations for collected water where site conditions allow.

Some properties need more than one approach. We consider the existing slope, soils, available discharge location, underground utilities and the intended use of the yard.

Drainage Project Estimates

How Much Does Yard Drainage Installation Cost?

Drainage projects vary considerably. A short downspout extension is a different scope of work than a yard-wide drainage system with multiple collection points, extensive piping and grading.

Factors include trench length, excavation depth, soil and groundwater conditions, buried utilities, pipe and basin requirements, available outlets and the amount of yard restoration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions About Yard Drainage & Installation.

What is the best way to fix standing water in my yard?

The right solution depends on why the water collects. Options may include regrading, French drains, catch basins, drainage piping or surface swales. Soil conditions and a suitable drainage outlet are important considerations.

Do you install French drains?

Yes. R&H has documented French drain installations, including a Hastings project that also included two gutter drains near the house.

Can you bury my gutter downspouts?

Yes. Underground gutter drainage is one of our documented services. We have completed projects using buried drainage piping and leach basins to manage roof runoff.

Do you install catch basins and drain boxes?

R&H installs drainage collection components, including basins and underground piping, as appropriate for the property's drainage needs.

Can drainage help keep water away from my foundation?

Drainage and grading improvements can help manage water collecting near a foundation. However, persistent basement leakage may involve other building or waterproofing issues that need separate assessment.

Can you fix an existing drainage system?

R&H offers drainage installation and repair services. Contact us with details about the existing system, what isn't working and any known pipe or outlet problems.

Will drainage installation destroy my lawn?

Excavation can disturb the ground, but the impact depends on the site and installation method. On one Hastings project, R&H used plywood beside the trench to protect the existing lawn from extensive mini-excavator track damage.

Do you grade and hydroseed yards after drainage work?

Yes. R&H has documented projects combining drainage installation, finish grading and hydroseeding. The restoration work included will depend on the agreed project scope.

What is the difference between a French drain and a catch basin?

A French drain is generally used to intercept subsurface water through a permeable trench and perforated pipe. A catch basin collects surface water at a specific point and directs it into a drainage system.

Can you help with drainage across my driveway?

R&H also offers culvert installation and replacement, grading and erosion control services. The best approach depends on where the runoff originates and how it crosses the property.

How much does drainage installation cost?

Costs depend on excavation requirements, piping length, number of drains, soil conditions, site access, discharge arrangements and restoration work. Request an estimate for your specific property.

Where do you provide drainage services?

R&H is based in Hastings, Michigan, and serves Barry County and surrounding West Michigan areas. Contact us with your project location to confirm service availability.
